چکیده

It turns out that knowledge required to build and maintain experience-based systems is found within largely unstructured texts. This led me to become deeply interested in the topic, which is now popularly known as text mining and knowledge discovery, and is a thriving area of research. I started a company in 1998 called Terus Technologies, which was dedicated to the extraction and discovery of knowledge from text for use in knowledge-based decision support systems. Unable to sustain Terus only with private funds, I moved to the US in 2000 and continued to research various topics in knowledge-based decision support, machinelearning and knowledge discovery. However, I felt that the industrial research environment I operated within was incompatible with my vision of agile multidisciplinary research for technical innovation and product development.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Mine Countermeasures via the Physical Traveling Salesman Problem

Mine Countermeasures (MCM) present a challenging motion planning problem when taking into account ocean currents, complex bathymetry, and vehicle dynamics. In an effort to improve autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) motion planning for MCM, this work presents a Physical Traveling Salesmen Problem (PTSP) approach as a way to quickly and robustly generate motions for the reacquisition and identif...

Mine Countermeasures Requirements To Support Future Operational Maneuver

istorically, the Navy’s mine countermeasures ships and helicopters were designed for Cold War applications, which emphasized clearance of our own ports and gave amphibious assault low priority. Today’s naval mission requires regional contingency operations where friendly forces must be capable of projecting power ashore. For example, the attempted assault of Kuwait during Desert Storm by the U....

A Probabilistic Approach for Mine Burial Prediction

Predicting the degree of burial of mines in soft sediments is one of the main concerns of Naval Mine CounterMeasures (MCM) operations. This is a difficult problem to solve due to uncertainties and variability of the sediment parameters (i.e., density and shear strength) and of the mine state at contact with the seafloor (i.e., vertical and horizontal velocity, angular rotation rate, and pitch a...

Integrating Cost and Performance Models to Determine Requirements Allocation for Complex Systems

he engineering of complex systems or a “system of systems” has become increasingly problematic in recent years, yet effective “architecting” approaches that enable cost/performance trades are still immature. This article describes a systematic approach to allocating top-level system-of-systems requirements to component systems, which has been demonstrated on a naval mine countermeasures system-...

Planning Safe Paths through Hazardous Environments

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are robotic platforms that are commonly used to map the sea floor, for example for benthic surveys or for naval mine countermeasures (MCM) operations. AUVs create an acoustic image of the survey area, such that objects on the seabed can be identified and, in the case of MCM, mines can be found and disposed of. The common method for creating such seabed maps...
